My fondest holiday memory as a child was placing the tiny plastic lights in my mother's ceramic Christmas tree, which was handed down to her from her grandmother. I loved making sure the colors alternated - that no one color repeated itself too soon. I have talked about that tree ad nauseum, but haven't seen it in years - it's in storage at my parent's house in northern Michigan.
And...cue the tears. This is where I get misty. Shawn had been scouring ebay, with help from my Mom via email and texts, to find me my very own ceramic tree. I had no idea what he was up to til I came home yesterday to it sitting on our mantel. I'm shocked that he was able to keep it a secret. It's a Christmas miracle!
The timing was pretty incredible: just yesterday I had posted about the
advent calendar I made for Shawn. This December, I've sat out the sample sales and resisted the enticements of e-tailers because I've enjoyed delighting Shawn instead. Besides, I have everything I could ever want anyway - including, now, a ceramic Christmas tree.

My parents had one of these when I was growing up and I loved it, unfortunately they got rid of it in a garage sale. I remember making sure the lights alternated too!
That's so beautiful what y'all have done for each other! (i.e., making/finding special gifts for one another) Sounds like both of you are feeling the true Christmas spirit.
North Meets South
What a fantastic gift!
My mom had one of these trees when I was growing up, too. It was always a part of our village (four ceramic houses, ceramic people, fake snow!). I have a little village of my own now, but no tree. Maybe next year I'll try to find one!
Now that's a good man.
Way to go, Shawn :-)
I had one of those growing up, too!! I think my grandmother might have painted it? I wonder where it is.
How incredibly thoughtful of Shawn! It really is a wonderful present that you will have for a lifetime!
Wow that brings back memories for me too! Shawn is incredibly thoughtful.
I remember those! How thoughtful of your husband... I love sweet unexpected surprises like that.
Maybe it's a Michigan thing because my grandma handed one of these down to my parents and it's one of my favourite christmas decorations. What a fantastic Christmas story and so thoughtful of Shawn. I want to give you both Christmas hugs :)
I love your tree, I have one too,I actually have my moms, which was my grandmothers, in my family room right now. My tree reminds me so much of my childhood Christmases...I loved putting in the lights but I always had to make sure the same color was not too close to each other
I fondly remember that exact same tree at my grandparents' house, too. Ah, memories...
Nope! Not a Michigan thing.
My grandmother had one also and she lived in Washington DC.
I loved at thing also!
Funny, my grandmother made us believed that she made hers! LOL
Either that was the craft of the year that year, or Woolworth's had a great sale on them?
That has got to be the best gift ever!
So I agree that this might be a Michigan thing because I had one of these growing up that I got from my grandparents and I loved it...and I haven't thought about it in forever, this post made my day! :)
What a score! My family has a similar sort of ceramic tree, passed down from a Grandmother. I've been wanting something like it for my own abode. I was thinking of trying to paint my own at one of those paint your own pottery places. Scouring ebay just might be a tad easier. How sweet of your husband to find you one of your very own.
So happy you found one! I made one of these with my mom forever ago at a ceramics painting store and have great memories of it as well.
we had one JUST like this. How cool that you now have one, and what great memories it brings! Love the advent calendar too, super cute.
Kate- the ceramic tree is in our will- you get it- Dad
